F&R is seeking a Staff Monitoring/Instrumentation Engineer. The candidate will work in Geostructural monitoring services department that provides professional services on a wide variety of public and private sector projects including: buildings, bridges, roadways and pavements, retaining and shoring structures, underground infrastructure, towers, slopes and embankments, dams and other civil works projects.  F&R’s Geostructural monitoring group based out of Dulles, VA provides monitoring services mainly in Capital Region (MD, DC and VA) along with assisting other branches of the company.  Monitoring services will be provided during pre-construction and construction phases of projects.  Since you will be the lead on a variety of project assignments, you will often have to coordinate the efforts of other branch members and consultants to deliver results that ensure our goal of exceeding our clients’ expectations on every project.  You will work directly under the Director of Monitoring Services.



Tasks may include, but are not limited to: 

  • Planning and coordinating field monitoring and instrumentation programs including site reconnaissance.
  • Assisting in planning various equipment needs for the project to include Structural, Vibration, Settlement, SOE, Noise, and WMATA Tunnel monitoring.
  • Performing pre-construction surveys, data analysis and calculations.
  • Assisting in developing design parameters and recommendations for specific projects.
  • Preparation of project work scopes, budgets and proposals.
  • Preparation of Monitoring reports and deliverables.
  • Managing Monitoring projects from inception, including project schedules, budgets and invoicing.
  • Overseeing and providing guidance for support staff.
  • Interacting with existing and potential clients.
  • Travel to the sites within VA, DC and MD.


  • Bachelor’s Degree in Civil Engineering, Surveying, Instrumentation, Networking or related field.
  • Registration as a Land Surveyor is a plus but not required, if the candidate is from surveying background.
  • 2 to 5 years of progressive engineering experience including analysis and project management.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills along with the ability to work in a team environment.
  • Robust project and task management skills, including scheduling, execution and follow-up.
  • Must be able to communicate effectively, internally and externally, and demonstrate the ability to produce and review written reports for clients and senior staff.
  • Be a team player who is self-motivated and performance driven.
  • Be a problem solver that can address roadblocks with poise and control.
  • Ability to learn and use various software application packages and proficiency in simple computer programming is necessary.
  • Valid driver’s license with insurable driving record.
  • Can do attitude is necessary for the candidate as the projects vary in scope widely.
  • Suitable exceptional candidates with less experience may be trained to evolve into this position.
